"Finding Inspiration in Every Flip of a Coin"

THE HISTORY OF THE COIN TOSS
Flipping a coin, tossing a coin, or playing heads or tails is a two-person game that dates back centuries with only two possible outcomes.

Today, the coin toss is widely used as a form of decision making between two equally possible answers. One person flips the coin in the air, while the other person (or one of the two participants) shouts heads or tails.

‘Heads’ usually refers to the side of the coin that features a portrait, or head, while ‘Tails’ refers to the opposite side. This is not because it features any form of tail, but because it is the opposite of heads.

So, when trying to determine who goes first, or who gets to choose a film, if the person calls out ‘heads’ and the heads side of the coin lands face up, then this person is the winner. But if it lands on ‘tails’, the other person wins. Simple.

There is also the rare occasion (approximately one in 6,000) where the coin will land perfectly on its side. This actually occurred in 2013 during a game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Detroit Lions. Fortunately, the referee foresaw this moment and made it clear that if the coin was to land on an angle, he’d take another flip.

The game itself has been traced back as far as ancient Rome, where it was seen as a game of chance referred to as “Heads or Ships”, or “navia aut caput”, because of the two-headed god design on one side and the ship’s prow that appeared on the other side of early metal coins.

The Roman rules for the game differ slightly from our own. Participants would not call out their prediction, but were assigned either “heads” or “ships” prior to the coin being tossed.

Later in Middle-aged Britain, the game was known as “Cross or Pile” due to one side featuring a cross and the other indentations from the pressing process referred to as a “pile”.

In France, the game was known as “Pile ou Face” (heads or tails backwards) because the coin had indentations from the pressing process (referred to as a “pile”) on one side and a head-of-state on the other (referred to as “face”).

In Peru it’s still called cara o sello (“face or seal”).

Throughout history though, no matter the name, it continues to be used to grant favor, settle disputes, make decisions and even gamble.

OUR STORY
EXCLUSIVE "Head or Tails" - Printed Ceramic Coins

My brother and I recently started playing a sport that utilizes the flip of a coin at the start of the game to determine which person or team goes first. Since joining the sport, we have been hard pressed to find an easy-to-read coin that we can use for this intended purpose.

Everyone who plays a game requiring a coin toss,  needs a good coin with clearly visible images on both sides. Players toss a coin at the start of most games to decide who goes first and most metal coin currency is problematic because it’s either too small or it’s impossible to read if it lands on the ground and the sun can complicate this further. Everyone agrees, a coin toss should be simple!

So our initial excitement had us wanting to develop and manufacture an exclusive line of highly visible and collectible printed "Heads or Tails" coins to improve the games we love to play.  The idea was simple. We would manufacture our exclusive custom coins for sports clubs and leagues all around the world... until we realized that coin tossing has become interwoven with so many other aspects of our lives.
